Student Groups

Design for America (DFA)

DFA is an award-winning, nationwide network of interdisciplinary student teams and community members that use design to create local, social impact. Founded at McCormick in 2009 by Liz Gerber and students, DFA focuses on empathy with specific user groups to develop insights that lead to innovative solutions that are daring, feasible, and applicable to communities throughout the country.

Segal Professional Bridge (SPB)

The Segal Professional Bridge group connects Segal's graduate and undergraduate students with like-minded professionals and students from other schools who are passionate about the broad field of design. SPB hosts networking events, workshops, and presentations on campus throughout the academic year.

Northwestern Organization of Design Engineers (NODE)

Northwestern’s design-focused student organization, NODE provides workshops and access to tools that improve the community’s design work and instruction. Inspiring fun and creativity, NODE is a resource for undergraduates from various backgrounds who are interested in good design.

Design Competition

Design Competition

Every year, teams of McCormick undergraduates from different departments come together to build robots and compete for prizes. Teams of students design, build, and program their robots independently before setting their creations loose on a pre-determined track during the spring competition.

Northwestern Formula Racing (Formula SAE)

Founded in 2006, this undergraduate organization designs and builds racecars from scratch to compete in the Formula SAE race, organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Northwestern's Baja SAE team

Baja SAE Team

Baja SAE students design and build off-road vehicles that can survive the punishment of rough terrain. Since 1988, Northwestern’s Baja SAE Team has competed in Baja-style races sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The team actively seeks new undergraduate members.

Northwestern University Solar Car Team (NUsolar)

NUsolar is an undergraduate student organization that designs, builds, and races solar-powered vehicles. Since it is completely student-run, team members take on a wide spectrum of responsibilities, including engineering, manufacturing, operations, marketing, and finance.

Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW)

ESW at Northwestern mobilizes engineers through education, training, and practical action, while building collaborative partnerships to meet the needs of current and future generations. Through education outreach and action-based projects like SmartTree, the organization empowers undergraduates to take on leadership roles in applying sustainability principles to their work.
