Master of Product Design and Development Management Program

MPD²

Affiliated with the Segal Design Institute, the Master of Product Design and Development Management (MPD2) program is intended for active professionals eager to master the concepts and tools of product design and development.

In this master’s degree program, students benefit from a highly focused curriculum that teaches crucial skills. Two classes are taught for three hours each week for five weeks, with a total of 24 required classes.

Topics include:

  • managing creativity
  • innovation
  • lean design
  • design strategy
  • management of product innovation
  • end-user research
  • marketing
  • project and product management
  • business and financial issues

Full-Time or Part-Time

The program, which takes place on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, may be completed in one year as a full-time graduate student or in two to four years as a part-time student:

Full-Time Students

Two days per week, on Fridays and Saturdays

Part-Time Students

One day per week, on alternating Fridays and Saturdays, two classes each day for the standard two year part-time program.  Other schedules are available for three and four year students.

Courses are taught on a quarterly schedule (fall, winter, and spring) with a new class of students beginning every September.

Who Should Apply?

The program is highly recommended for mid- to senior-level, technically trained professionals who are involved in the design and development of new products.

Those professionals who have a passion for product design and development will learn the necessary skills to ensure themselves and their companies a leadership position.

The ideal MPD2 student demonstrates:

  • the potential for leadership and managerial growth

Prospective students must have a minimum of three years professional experience related to product design and development. Students typically have an undergraduate degree in engineering, design, or business. Individuals with other degrees and appropriate work experience are welcome to apply.
