Northwestern.Engineering.Design: Scot Herbst, KAIKU Design

What does product innovation have to do with sailboat racing? Why is "clean" air so critical to the success of new products? While the fleet battles it out, the true innovator charts his own coarse and brilliant products are born. From Eames chairs to Green Toys, great products rely on tact, vision, and a little luck to claim their rightful position at the head of the pack.

With dual degrees in Economics and Product Design, Scot solves complex design problems with a signature mix of visual and mechanical simplicity. Having recently been awarded the 2010 RedDot Award in Product Design, Scot's iconic work can be seen in modern furniture, consumer electronics, housewares and toys while working with industry-leading brands such as Nike, HP, Cisco, and LG. Scot's own products under his KAIKU brand have recently been selected for the New York Museum of Modern Art's retail collection. Scot also holds a 100-ton license in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
