Enabling Creativity Through Better Tools for Designers and Developers
The tools we use influence what we are able to create. Good tools augment our intelligence, making us more creative and productive. In this talk, I will survey tools that my colleagues and I have built for designers and software developers over the last six years. By studying how these tools are used, we've demonstrated that lowering the cost of making mistakes and better supporting just-in-time learning have a large impact on the quantity and quality of work creative professionals produce. I will use our results to both offer general implications for design, and to motivate new research directions.
Joel Brandt is a Senior Research Scientist at Adobe. He is a Human-Computer Interaction researcher who studies how improved tools can help designers and developers be more creative and productive. His research has informed the design of numerous widely used tools, including Generator for Adobe Photoshop (http://bit.ly/psgenerator) and the Brackets code editor (http://brackets.io). Joel completed his Ph.D. in the Human-Computer Interaction Group at Stanford University in 2010.
